Claudia Sheinbaum has a lengthy list of accomplishments: She was the first woman chosen to head Mexico City, the capital of her country and one of the biggest cities in the Western Hemisphere. She holds a Ph.D. and a shared Nobel Peace Prize.

She now has another opportunity to change history. With a commanding lead in Sunday's Mexican election, Ms. Sheinbaum, 61, has the potential to become the nation's first female president.

She is aware that she has an image issue, though.

Can she be her own leader? is a question that many Mexicans have. Or is she the president's puppet right now?

Ms. Sheinbaum told reporters earlier this year, "There's this idea, because a lot of columnists say it, that I don't have a personality."
